What is BS&W?
BS&W (Basic Sediment & Water) is a term that is interchangeable with ‘water cut’, ‘BSW’, and ‘water in oil’, depending on industry influences. Originally, BS&W measured the free water and sediment in a hydrocarbon as a single volume percentage, but as filtration and separation technology have improved, the modern meaning of BS&W has come to refer to only the water portion of the measurement. Why is representative sampling so crucial?
Due to several different factors, when pulling a sample from any hydrocarbon production environment there is always a risk that any given sample won’t be an accurate representation of the hydrocarbon in question. Maybe the water and oil aren’t mixing properly in the pipeline. Maybe a discrepancy in the production process resulted in a large bubble flowing past the sample point at the moment of measurement.
There are countless scenarios that could result in a non-representative sample, but an on-line meter mitigates these problems by measuring continuously – presenting an average over time, rather than a single data point.

What does a factory calibration include?
During production our devices are hydro-tested and electronically validated in-house. Calibration curves are then set and calibrated in our lab based on customer needs and specifications.
Can Delta C water cut meters be calibrated in the field?
Yes, based on the desired range of the fluid being measured, a field calibration will be used to optimize the unit’s performance for the specific application.
How often does a Delta C water cut meter need to be calibrated?
The calibration or validation interval is generally dictated by contractual or regulatory requirements. However, we recommend a validation check be conducted annually.

What is the measurement range of a Delta C water cut meter?
Our water cut meters can measure changes in water content down to +/-50 ppm (0.005%) of an oil continuous process. This hypersensitive technology performs optimally in 0-50% water content of an oil continuous hydrocarbon.
What is oil continuous flow?
When two liquids that cannot usually be mixed are blended together (in this case oil and water) the mixture is called an emulsion. In any emulsion, each of the two liquids is assigned a phase depending on their relative quantities and the way in which they are interacting with each other. One of the liquids (the dispersed phase) is always dispersed into the other (the continuous phase).
Our capacitive technology can comfortably and reliably measure the water content of any emulsion with an oil continuous flow.
